The Harder They Come – Review

The Harder They Come at Stratford East more than lives up to the hype. Bold, joyful, and full of heart, it’s a thrilling celebration of Jamaican culture, music, and community. Watching it at Stratford East feels particularly special, with an audience that fully embraces the show, responding with cheers, singing, and applause throughout.

Under the direction of Matthew Xia, the production is packed with energy and authenticity. The cast are clearly having a fantastic time on stage, and that joy is infectious. Every performer gives their all, delivering powerful vocals and bringing real emotional depth to Ivan’s journey from hopeful dreamer to troubled star.

A standout performance comes from Rachel John as Ivan’s mother, bringing warmth, wisdom, and soul to every scene. Ivan himself is charismatic and compelling, making you root for him even when he makes the wrong choices. His performance of The Harder They Come in the recording studio is an electrifying highlight that deservedly brings the house down.

Special praise must go to Shelly Maxwell for the outstanding choreography. The movement is vibrant, authentic, and full of joy, helping transport the audience straight to Jamaica. Combined with the colourful costumes, immersive music, and dynamic staging, you can almost feel the heat of the island radiating from the stage.

The production also makes excellent use of projections, creating beautiful images of Jamaica and adding cinematic scope to the storytelling. Whether showing lush landscapes or bustling streets, the visuals work seamlessly with the action on stage.

While the show is packed with feel-good energy and unforgettable music, it also has real emotional weight. Themes of ambition, struggle, love, and community give the story universal appeal, culminating in a moving finale that brings everyone together. By the end, the audience is on its feet, celebrating alongside the cast.

A vibrant, uplifting, and deeply entertaining production that deserves to be seen by as many people as possible. I’d happily see it again.
