London welcomes a fresh revival of Peter Quilter’s 2005 play, “End of the Rainbow“. This production offers a tragic yet humorous look at the final months of iconic singer and actor Judy Garland, who is brought to life on stage by Drag Race icon Jinkx Monsoon. The play explores Garland’s complex love triangle with her hotheaded soon-to-be fifth husband, Mickey (Jacob Dudman), and her caring pianist, Anthony (Adam Filipe).
The stage is beautifully designed by Jasmine Swan, featuring eloquent white draped curtains that cover the space. At the center of the stepped staging sits a lone black grand piano, creating a striking visual focus.
Quilter’s story unfolds with dramatic intensity against the pristine stage landscape, shifting between Judy Garland’s private life in her hotel room and her public appearances on radio talk shows and at her London residency at Talk of the Town. As her addiction to drugs and alcohol spirals out of control, it is further enabled by her fifth husband, Mickey, who seeks to profit from her performances. In contrast, her steadfast pianist, Anthony, tries to keep her clean and save her from the harsh pressures of fame. Tragically, as history records, he does not succeed, and Judy eventually passes away from an overdose.
Dudman and Filipe deliver outstanding portrayals of these polarizing characters, acting as the yin and yang of Judy’s life. However, it is Jinkx Monsoon’s impressive performance as Judy Garland that leaves a lasting impression. Monsoon harmoniously blends the comedic and tragic moments of Garland’s life with impeccable vocal impressions and remarkable singing ability. Her heart-wrenching rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” solidifies the iconic status of one of the most beloved performers of the Golden Age.
Don’t miss this classic piece of theatre, currently playing at Soho Theatre Walthamstow, London, until 21 June.
