Theatre Royal Plymouth Announces New Production of FAME

Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP), in association with Jamie Wilson Productions, is delighted to announce a bold new production of Fame The Musical. This reimagined revival will play a strictly limited run at TRP from 28 July – 15 August 2026, directed and choreographed by Tom Jackson Greaves (The Book Thief, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, Whistle Down the Wind) in collaboration with acclaimed designer Soutra Gilmour (Evita, Sunset Boulevard, & Juliet). Casting and further creative team will be announced in due course, with tickets on sale soon.

Fame The Musical first premiered in Europe at Theatre Royal Plymouth in 1995, before transferring to the West End where it ran for more than a decade, toured extensively, and inspired audiences around the world. Now, on the 30th anniversary of that landmark premiere, TRP and Jamie Wilson Productions are bringing the show home in a bold new revival for the 21st century, featuring songs from the iconic 1980s movie.

James Mackenzie-Blackman, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of TRP, said: “Fame signifies another key milestone for TRP in making our mark as a leading producing theatre. It’s also a pleasure to once again share the ride with Jamie Wilson Productions, who we worked with on the hugely successful The Devil Wears Prada, which premiered at TRP and is now still playing to sell-out audiences in the West End. Our production of Fame will pay homage to the iconic show’s original spirit and enduring legacy, while inviting a new generation to fall in love with it as so many of us did before.”

Producer Jamie Wilson added: “Having watched Fame countless times growing up, I’m thrilled to be part of this new production at the wonderful Theatre Royal Plymouth, marking 30 years since the show premiered there. Over the years, Fame has entertained and enthralled fans across the world with its energy, music and choreography. This new production will bring nostalgia to those who grew up with it and inspire a brand-new generation of theatregoers.”

Director and Choreographer, and TRP Associate Artistic Director, Tom Jackson Greaves said: “I wore out my VHS copy of Fame as a teenager. Its intoxicating depiction of 1980s New York and its beautiful, diverse inhabitants taught me so much about identity, ambition and possibility. Ultimately, Fame is a love letter to the arts – celebrating all forms, all people and all journeys. To revisit this story on its 30th anniversary is such a full-circle moment, and I can’t wait to rediscover and reinvigorate it alongside one of the UK’s most brilliant talents, designer Soutra Gilmour.”

Set in 1980 Manhattan, Fame follows a group of students at the High School of Performing Arts as they navigate the highs and lows of ambition, talent, sacrifice and identity on their journey from enrolment to graduation. This unapologetic and raw musical takes audiences straight to the heart of showbusiness, where passion and perseverance collide with the realities of chasing a dream.

Fame The Musical was originally conceived and developed by David De Silva, with book by Jose Fernandez, lyrics by Jacques Levy and music by Steve Margoshes, featuring the title song “Fame” written by Dean Pitchford and Michael Gore.

Fame The Musical is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International.
