The towering Main Hall at The Assembly Hall is the home of Onyx Productions’ Australian circus show ‘360 ALLSTARS’ at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Delivering a thrilling medley of breakdance, BMX, basketball, beatboxing and drumming, it captivates the busy audience from start to finish. There is no real narrative or storyline to the piece but this dynamic show is an exhilarating celebration of street culture, blending a range of urban art forms that allows each performer the chance to shine.
An incredibly talented cast from all over the world deliver skilful performances from gravity-defying breakdancing to mind-bending basketball tricks. They showcase their talents while engaging with each other as a team, creating an infectious energy in the room and showing the camaraderie and heart-warming support between them all.
The visuals are a real highlight here with a dynamic lighting design which also uses a large video screen at the rear of the stage. Tie this together with a live drummer, rhythmic beatboxing and solid vocals using a loop pedal & DJ decks and we get an exhilarating hour of modern circus.
While the show is an undeniable spectacle, some moments are very repetitive and the constant introducing, naming and thanking of the acts is a little grating. I think the age suitability also needs a rethink. Advertised as 5 years and above, it is very loud and overwhelming. There’s no doubting older children will enjoy it but it’s not the family show it promises to be.
‘360 ALLSTARS’ is a joyful celebration and high-octane experience of talent & creativity and a strong reminder of the beauty found in street culture.
