The Nose Dive Assembly is a circus show at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival presented by The Revel Puck Circus.
This family-friendly production taking homage at the glorious Underbelly’s Circus Hub is a contemporary circus full of energy, fun and warmth.
We first meet our ringmaster Pierrot, supposed to be introducing the acts but unable to concentrate on her job due to her desperation to be able to fly like her counterparts.
Between acts she tries all kinds of methods to help her to fly, even wearing four large electric fans on her back! She is a great distraction whilst the rest of the troupe are moving large circus apparatus and resetting the stage. She has the audience in the palm of her hands and it’s impossible to not warmly will her on in her plight.
Refreshingly, the performers are dressed in matching boiler suits rather than the usual expected acrobatic leotards and they all help within the production by moving the set and acting as counterweights to the aerialists.
It’s a lovely idea to be able to watch the workings of backstage and the harmony shown from these performers as they sit at the rear of the stage watching and supporting eachother’s solo acts is so heart-warming and like nothing you see in other productions.
Although a large-scale show, we feel the camaraderie between them all and it gives off such a welcoming, friendly vibe.
The circus tricks come thick and fast in this hour-long performance with aerial acts & high-wire and notable highlights include the exceptional teeterboarding duo and a novel Cyr wheel act over two levels (where credit must also go to the ingenious lighting design). Simply a great spectacle to watch.
The finale using the famous ‘wheel of death’ brought applause and gasps as the female duo showed such harmony and daring strength. It felt extra special to hear the audible communication between the two of them rather than the act be drowned out in music.
The whole show is modern and fresh with the excellent, talented performers creating a family feel amongst themselves as they hug and praise each other throughout. This young company deserve huge success this Fringe and beyond as they continue to delight audiences of all ages. Truly outstanding.
