Nina Conti: Whose Face Is It Anyway? – Review

Nina Conti’s current tour, the aptly named ‘Whose Face Is It Anyway?’, takes homage at Assembly’s McEwan Hall for a handful of shows during this year’s famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Conti is a master of her craft delivering a dazzling showcase of improvisation, comedy, puppetry and of course ventriloquism that brings an unforgettable evening filled with audience interaction, laughter and surprise.

With the help of a live guitarist at times, she gives us her trademark routine of placing hilarious caricature masks on audience member’s faces and voicing them in hilarious scenarios. It’s an interactive performance in which Conti turns ordinary spectators into unsuspecting stars of the show. Watching her conduct these interactions is like witnessing a comedic dance – intricate, spontaneous, and utterly delightful.

Of course, her famous and popular Monkey makes regular appearances throughout the hour-long show and there’s even an advice section where Monkey becomes agony aunt to anyone in the audience who needs it.

A few technical issues meant the opening night began 25 minutes late but these will of course be ironed out and it didn’t take away from the flawless, hysterical performance from arguably the country’s best ventriloquist.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan of ventriloquism or simply looking for a night of belly laughs, “Whose Face Is It Anyway?” is a must-see and real highlight of this year’s Edinburgh Fringe programme.

It’s a jaw-dropping performance even though Conti’s jaw barely drops at all.
