The multi award-winning singer and comedienne Jess Robinson brings her pitch perfect impressions to the beautiful Piccolo Tent in Assembly George Square Gardens at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Robinson is an absolute genius. Not only does she exquisitely belt out Elton John’s greatest hits, she sings them through the voices of other iconic female celebrities. Her spoken impressions need to be heard to be believed but to watch her sing whilst also mimicking our favourite stars is an absolute masterpiece.
We were treated to all the classic Elton numbers that you’d expect voiced by, as Robinson explains, the constant noises she lives with in her head. Amy Winehouse, Liza Minnelli and a sing off between Britney Spears, Julie Andrews & Katherine Jenkins are notable highlights. There’s also a hilarious Kate Bush impression which brings the house down but the real showstopper comes from audience suggestions which Robinson then seamlessly strings together in a random, improvised order on the spot. Liz Truss, Sharon Osborne and Lorraine Kelly are performed superbly and of course Sonia from Eastenders had to make appearances throughout! She moves effortlessly between the voices and keeps the hour long show moving at a strong pace.
It’s not just the impressions which shine here though – she is a singing sensation in her own right. Her outstanding vocal range is flawless and she certainly gave Elton’s songs the gravitas they deserve.
This is Robinson at her very best. She’s a Fringe favourite but she honestly gets better every year. Relaxed, totally on form and with the audience in the palm of her hand. A masterclass in musical comedy.
