FLIP Fabrique: Six Degrees – Review

The Canadian acrobatic troupe ‘FLIP Fabrique’ bring their circus show to the Underbelly Circus Hub at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival and it’s a piece packed full of heart, humour and incredible skill.

The production begins with our five performers receiving an invitation to an old abandoned house, yet this house appears to have a personality of its own. Six° shares the concept that everyone on Earth can be connected to anyone else through a chain of no more than six degrees of separation. This somewhat loose storyline is the theming for an abundance of jaw-dropping circus skills to be interwoven cleverly into the narrative. In an almost entirely non-verbal show, the busy audience are treated to an unforgettable 65 minutes of acrobatic theatre that shimmered with elegance, humour and sheer physical power.

Notable highlights include a graceful Cyr wheel dance, complex juggling acts and a beautiful, show-stealing trampoline routine which needs to be seen to believed.

The ensemble nature of the production was a joy to watch with each cast member taking their moment to shine admirably, yet assisting the others and the storyline when not the centre of attention. Strong acting and dance skills were also displayed throughout and each performer brought their own character to the stage. The set—a clever series of moveable structures depicting the inner rooms—became a playground of possibility, and the sound design subtly underscored the emotions without ever overwhelming the action.

Six° is more than just your standard circus show. It’s a beautiful piece of theatre and a poetic showcase of what FLIP Fabrique does best – blending technical brilliance with theatrical soul. This is a show not to be missed at this year’s Fringe. Dazzling, heartfelt, and utterly unforgettable.
