Australian theatre company ‘That Science Gang’ bring their science based production to the Udderbelly at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe after previous success.
The show follows Professors Lexi Con and Noel Edge (the Word Nerd and the Science Freak) as they take us on a journey through every alphabet letter with unusual and almost unpronounceable words (one consisted of 29 letters) and a super scientific experiment for each individual letter.
Audience participation was included pre-show with children choosing letter tiles which were then displayed on the wall at the back of the stage. This showed the order of the experiments to be random, a nice gimmick meaning every show is different.
The performance then started with a slightly lengthy and rather cheesy introductory song. An odd inclusion but a harmless way to get the show going. Once the experiments began, we were treated to many scientific thrills including explosions and fireballs, floating beach balls and everyday life hacks such as how to empty a full bottle quickly. There was comedy, creativity and several successful attempts (too many for my liking!) to give the audience a good splashing!
The show was fun and fast-paced and so well produced to time that they were able to have a countdown timer displaying a digital clock ticking down to the last second. However, moments were sadly lost due to the rapid speed the two performers were speaking and there was also an opportunity missed to build up to a grand finale.
The audience of all ages were certainly in awe by the many clever, different experiments but I feel the fast use of the complicated words to describe each experiment with the corresponding letter of the alphabet was probably lost on most adults, let alone the children it was aimed at.
It’s a fun, entertaining show and a good opportunity for children to become interested in science but unfortunately they might not remember much of the educational side.
