This family made show, performed by Mario Marchese and produced by his wife Katie with their two children in tow, takes homage in this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival inside the famous upside down purple cow, ‘Udderbelly’.
At the start of the show, Katie introduces her magical, comedic husband by listing his many accolades. One of which, a quote from David Blaine, claims Mario is ‘the best kids magician in the world’. A strong statement to live up to but after spending just 60 minutes in his company, I can confirm it is absolutely accurate. In fact, not only is he the best kids magician in the world but I defy any adult to watch and not be wowed by the magic, bamboozled by the robotics and charmed by Mario’s chaotic and cheeky charisma. He effortlessly combines comedy alongside some brilliant tricks (better than what you’d expect for a children’s magician to be honest) and it’s all linked together by his love of robots.
A highlight of the phenomenal hour-long show was when the hand-made set and props suddenly grew a naughty mind of their own and turned on Mario. Bursting, flipping, falling, twisting, breaking and exploding all over the stage.
There are some real ‘wow’ moments in the show which I won’t spoil but a notable mention must go to the brilliant little robot made of a tomato soup can who comes alive when Mario isn’t watching. There’s some excellent thought-provoking messages too, married alongside his unique, anarchic humour.
It’s an absolute must see at the Fringe and you probably won’t find a better children’s theatre show this season. Truly formidable and just perfect.
