Award-winning comedy duo ‘Gabez’ have brought their production ‘Live Manga’ to the Edinburgh Fringe this year, performing at Assembly George Square and, out of the many shows we’ve seen so far, this would be my pick of the festival! It had me and the rest of the crowd in hysterics from start to finish! The pair hit the ground running as they entered the stage to perform a hugely energetic and clever dance/superhero/manga style fight routine – it was simply genius.
Throughout the rest of the performance, they skillfully combine mime, dance, audience participation and storytelling in this (mostly) non verbal, totally ridiculous and incredibly funny show.
Live Manga is a masterclass in physical comedy. The two performers blend silly comic routines with clever timing and playful interactions that provoke raucous laughter. Whether it’s through slapstick humour or witty character dynamics, the comedic elements feel organic and well-rehearsed.
Overall this show is brilliant because not only does it translate across languages and ages but it encourages you as the audience to suspend your disbelief and follow these highly animated performers on a whimsical journey. You are invited to allow yourself to relax into your inner child, let go of your inhibitions and just belly laugh! (There’s even an option for the kids to get involved in a competition to win a sticker!) A brilliant hour of joyous hilarity which I could watch time and time again.
