Blood Brothers – Review

Willy Russell’s widely known musical may be over forty years old but it’s still as popular as ever. The Assembly Hall Theatre in Tunbridge Wells is the latest stop on its national tour, now well into its second decade, and it’s certainly a big coup for the town. Disappointingly, large scale musicals don’t come here often, for some unknown reason, so it’s a delight to see Bill Kenwright’s production choosing a week long run here.

Unfortunately, programmes or even cast lists weren’t available which was a real shame and makes this review slightly difficult but overall it’s a timeless piece that still brings tears, joy and laughter. Russell’s writing is simply exquisite. His beautifully written lyrics are sublime and the music truly wonderful. Hits like ‘Marilyn Monroe’, ‘My Child’ and ‘Bright New Day’ are still as catchy as ever and the closing rendition of ‘Tell Me It’s Not True’ is a real tearjerker and performed by the cast with energy and aplomb.

The production however does feel slightly dated. Basic set, props and staging let the piece down and some questionable direction could do with modernising. The performances are generally good from the experienced cast but there’s the occasional odd acting choice which grates somewhat.

Luckily, Russell’s writing shines through and the crowded theatre jumped to a standing ovation at the curtain call. Hopefully they won’t have to wait long until another musical comes to town…
