You may normally expect to see Jonathan Pie in a spoof broadcasting video online but he’s currently playing the Duke of York’s Theatre in London’s West End for a limited run, following the success of his solo national tour.
Pie is an Alan Partridge-like creation from actor Tom Walker who takes the role of a bumbling broadcaster, fictitiously working for the BBC. His latest show ‘Heroes & Villains’ is a seventy minute lecture giving his direct and plain-spoken views on the past and present political structure of the country.
It’s an energetic rant at breakneck speed, sometimes a little too fast, covering everything from Margaret Thatcher to Boris Johnson with hilarious skits on Liz Truss and King Charles in between. But it’s on Rishi Sunak who Pie unleashes his main wrath, almost foaming at the mouth he barely pauses for breath as he releases a tsunami of abuse at the current Prime Minister. Audible gasps come from the busy crowd at the relevant, hard-hitting material which quickly turn into belly laughs and cheers of approval.
Walker’s top experience and knowledge of his craft clearly show as he gives a tour de force of a performance from start to finish. He leaves no stone unturned and it’s the Conservative party who come off the worst. He certainly isn’t afraid to speak his mind but it’s a polished set and exquisitely scripted and thought out.
His main agenda is ensuring we use our votes at the next General Election. ‘Get Your Votes Out For The Lads’ is his apt title targeting the male youth of today as well as acknowledging that rap might be the way they can empathise with him. Other notable highlights to the informative and entertaining evening include comparing Eton to a Hogwarts for C***s and an AI image of Thérèse Coffey defecating off Southend Pier. You get the idea.
‘Heroes & Villains’ is an enjoyable barrage of satirical comedy delivered manically by a master of his craft. However, ‘Villains’ would probably be a more appropriate title as there were very little positive heroic topics covered. But maybe that’s his point – there’s not a lot to be happy about with the country’s current political climate so Walker creates his own happiness by divulging his harshly honest and truthful views that you simply have to laugh, otherwise you’d cry.
I’ll definitely be using my vote – hopefully on Jonathan Pie becoming Prime Minister in the future…
