Priscilla The Party is an exciting new immersive production based on the beloved 1994 film, ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert‘.
This adaptation follows the journey of Tick, Adam, and Bernadette, three drag performers who embark on a colourful adventure across the Australian outback in their trusty old school bus, affectionately named Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Their ultimate destination is a casino in Alice Springs, where Tick’s wife runs the establishment and where Tick hopes to finally meet the son for the first time.
As you can imagine, a road trip with three drag queens in Australia is bound to be a wild and vibrant experience! The show is filled with sequins, lashes, and fabulous lip sync performances. It truly captures the essence of the drag culture and offers an immersive experience for the audience.
The venue, Outernet, is a newly constructed event space located beneath the streets of Soho near Tottenham Court Road station. It provides the perfect setting for this production, offering two levels of entertainment. The top level features a three-course sit-down dinner, while the lower level, on the dance-floor at stage level, provides access to cocktail bars and food throughout the performance. The audience is encouraged to get up close to the action on the dance-floor, where set pieces move around, enhancing the immersive experience and making the audience feel like they are part of the show.
However, I couldn’t help but feel that there was a missed opportunity during the pre-show. I believe having more drag performers present would have truly transported the audience to a vibrant drag venue in Sydney, setting the scene and building anticipation before the show begins.
Overall, Priscilla the party is a fun, colourful, and uplifting experience. It features iconic pop classics like “It’s Raining Men,” “Go West,” “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” and “I Will Survive,” among others. The show successfully creates a party atmosphere with its high-energy performances.
Stand-out performances of the evening included the Divas played by the exceptional talents of Grace Galloway, Grace Lai, and Sara Louise, who provided live vocals for the drag characters to lip sync to. They truly set a high standard with their outstanding vocals.
Lucy Park portrayed Cynthia The in a hilarious and attention-grabbing ping-pong ball act, showcasing impeccable comedic timing and charisma.
Trevor Ashley, as the drag queen MC “Gay cliche” stole the show with their campy costumes, flawless timing, and impeccable delivery of jokes expected from a seasoned professional. Additionally, Trevor’s live singing was exceptional.
This event is perfect for groups of friends looking to celebrate or anyone wanting to have a fun night out. The party continues with a DJ set after the show, so make sure to wear your dancing shoes.
