Ross Noble has grown to be one of the country’s finest comedians but his regular television, radio and podcast appearances are a mere appetiser to seeing him live on stage.
His new tour ‘Jibber Jabber Jamboree’ (the name cleverly telling you what to expect) is, as you’d hope from Noble, two hours of pure improvisation, audience suggestions and brain ramblings from, quite frankly, this hilarious genius of a man.
Large stone-looking monkey heads are positioned around the stage and, as the house lights dim and the opening voice over introduces Noble, jungle vines are suddenly inflated and cover the stage. It’s a random opening but certainly sets the tone for the two hours that follow.
Noble really is one of a kind. His brain constantly works at 100 miles per hour and his energetic set is filled with many comedic styles – physical comedy, wordplay, audience participation and even mime. How he remembers all of his callbacks as his mind goes from story to story, barely leaving room for breath (or thought!) is beyond me. He covers a range of topics from royalty to Covid, there’s a hysterical, faultless routine of Barack Obama singing ABBA songs in a Perspex box and he finally answers the question everyone is thinking ‘Does he have ADHD?’. There’s even time to impress us with his flawless impressions – Elvis, King Charles and Dara O’Briain just some of the names he easily mimics. His instant ease at dealing with heckles from Canterbury’s packed Marlowe Theatre is simply a delight to watch.
With no support act and a joyous encore, in which he purely takes questions from the audience, it’s a tour-de-force of a performance and really is Ross Noble at his greatest. An outstanding evening.
