Chris McCausland: Yonks

Turn your television to a comedy panel show these days and the chances are you’ll see Chris McCausland. An in-demand comic who appears regularly on TV & Radio but now he’s embarking on his current UK tour, ‘Yonks’.

It’s a hilarious romp through the life and ramblings of a sheer comic genius. He covers a wide range of topics from his growing up at primary school to his computing degree and all of his material has an observational tone that the packed Hazlitt Theatre in Maidstone can empathise with. An impeccably written section on the noises of electric cars brings the house down.

As a blind comedian, it’s interesting that his lack of vision isn’t mentioned much – but it’s glorious that it doesn’t need to be. His polished jokes do the work so that the obvious blindness punchlines don’t have to. His near seventy minute set is filled with gags and routines which make people laugh so easily, the time simply flies by.

Yonks’ is a slick and punchy show from a skilled performer who knows his craft so well. He’s so relaxed on the microphone and brings comedy out of any situation, laughing at himself along the way. It’s a conversational performance that flits from topic to topic, rather than following a specific theme throughout but it works well and the gags come thick & fast.

Support from young musical comedian Jon Long has nice moments but McCausland shows just how it’s done and the audience are left chuckling and reminiscing on an evening of mostly clean, comic bliss.
