Brief Encounter – Review

All aboard the classic tale of Love set in a railway station where we find our two leads Laura played brilliantly by Hannah Azuonye and Alec played by Baker Mukasa. From the first Encounter to the last they were superb. They lead well and as their characters love grew so did their performances.

This beautiful play starts in the hustling bustling station, the set was minimal but stunning with the cafe and house band entwined. They really set the tone that this was a special performance. Whether it be from the jazz music playing throughout. Myrtle (Christina MChristina) and Beryl (Ida Regan) making cups of tea and bath buns, it just felt like we were all in for a wild ride filled with laughter and love.

Georgia Frost playing Stanely brought a wonderful comedy element, whilst flirting throughout, showed a stunning vocal range. The wonderful music and voices that carried on with every number seemed to get bigger. The chorography stepped up with every number, including tap dancing and saxaphone playing skills from Matthew Allen.

My highlight was the whole ensemble jiving together, singing and dancing showed how talented each cast member was, all together they were fantastic. The whole audience were clapping away and letting the band and cast know that we were all aboard this wild ride together. I really enjoyed the different relationships throughout; a special mention going to Richard Galves and Christina Modestou who played love interests Myrtle and Fred. They showed a great chemistry; sincere love with the marriage proposal scene. Comedy gold with the Romeo and Juliet line, topped off with their song together which summed up their characters love life.

I want to highlight how incredible the band were lead by the maestro Mathew Malone, his interactions with the cast were wonderful. His passion and tone really laid the foundations for the play to flow and flourish.

I have been fortunate to attend the Exchange in recent months and the standard is very high. I feel Brief Encounter has raised the bar I highly recommend going to watch this masterpiece.
