Alex Hill’s one man play comedically lures you in and emotionally hits you with a shocking twist. His familiar, lovable energy and touching charm alike create a character every audience member has known and loved. His brilliant warmth and giddy humour drop the viewer’s guard allowing the message of the play to right-hook them in the face.
Alex’s love for football shines through in the writing of the play. The nuance, relatability and passion are ever present in the script alone and added with his energetic whirlwind of a performance, he creates a spectacle of football love, lust and loss.
Director Sean Turner, sound designer Sam Baxter and dramaturg Jake Vithana create a cleverly sculpted piece within a playful and purposeful set, with no space left unused. The heart of the piece lies with Alex as Billy embarking on a journey of increasing passion for football and coincidentally discovering toxic masculinity, hooliganism and ultimately sticking a flare up his arse for England! The effect of Billy’s actions on those around him is not left unexplored provoking the audience to draw their own conclusions as to the specifics of why a certain event takes place.
With remarkable reviews from a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, it is no surprise this play has returned to take London by storm. It is only the beginning of this marvellous play and I look forward to seeing where it goes next. If you get a chance to see it football fan or not: DO! Alex Hill is most definitely one to watch!
